There is a Secret About Zanzibar. Many Travel Brochures Forget to Mention the Tides.
On the east coast of the island, the tide recedes for kilometers. For half the day, you cannot swim. You can only walk on the coral rag.
That is why, at The Expat Tours, we primarily send our clients to the north. Specifically to Nungwi and Kendwa. Here, the ocean is swimmable all day long, the sand is powder soft, and the sunsets are legendary.
1. The “All Day Swim” Advantage
This is the biggest luxury in Zanzibar.
The geography is key. Because of the deep drop off in the north, the tide does not disappear. You can walk from your room to the ocean for a dip at 10 AM or 4 PM without needing to check a tide chart. This depth also creates that blindingly bright turquoise blue color you see on postcards. It is real, and it is spectacular.
2. Barefoot Luxury vs Party Vibes
While Nungwi and Kendwa are neighbors, they have different personalities.
Kendwa is famous for its wide, flat beaches and the Full Moon Party. The resorts here are often larger, resort style properties perfect for families or groups who want space.
Nungwi was historically a dhow building village. It has a bit more local character with cows occasionally walking on the beach and a lively strip of beach bars and restaurants. The hotels here range from intimate boutiques to high end luxury.
3. The Underwater World
You are on the doorstep of Mnemba Atoll. Most northern resorts offer boat trips to this marine reserve which offers some of the best snorkeling and diving in East Africa.
Jump off the boat and find yourself surrounded by dolphins which are often seen on the way there, green turtles, and thousands of colorful reef fish. It is a Finding Nemo experience in real life.
4. The Sunset Ritual
On the east coast, you watch the sunrise. In the north, you watch the sunset.
Every evening around 6 PM, the beach transforms. Dhow boats raise their white sails for sunset cruises, drummers start playing on the sand, and guests gather with cocktails to watch the sun dip below the horizon. It is the defining moment of a Zanzibar holiday.
The Turquoise Cure
After the early mornings of a safari, you deserve a lie in and a swim.
