Beyond the Crowds: Why You Should Choose a Private Conservancy Safari

There is a Secret in the Safari World.

In National Parks, you must stick to the road, you must be back by sunset, and you often share a lion sighting with a dozen other vehicles.

In Private Conservancies, the rules are different.

Conservancies like Ol Pejeta, Lewa, or the Mara Conservancies are private lands owned by communities or ranches. At The Expat Tours, we prioritize these stays because they offer the one luxury that matters most in the wild which is freedom.

1. The Numbers Game
In a conservancy, guest numbers are strictly limited.

You will not find the traffic jams that can happen in popular parks. The experience is intimate. You can sit quietly with a herd of elephants for an hour with only the sound of them chewing grass to keep you company. It feels like the wilderness is yours alone.

2. Breaking the “Park Rules”
Because these are private lands, your guide can do things that are forbidden in national parks.

The bush comes alive after dark. Using red light spotlights on night drives, you can search for nocturnal creatures like aardvarks, bushbabies, and hunting lions. Off roading is another major perk. If a leopard walks into the tall grass in a park, you have to let it go. In a conservancy, your guide can responsibly drive off road to keep up with the action. You can also step out of the jeep for walking safaris with a specialized guide. Tracking footprints and learning about medicinal plants gives you a completely different perspective on the ecosystem.

3. Ol Pejeta: The Rhino Sanctuary
One of our favorite conservancy destinations is Ol Pejeta. It is the largest Black Rhino sanctuary in East Africa and the only place in Kenya to see Chimpanzees.

Staying here allows you to visit the Northern White Rhinos, the last two on earth, and learn about the cutting edge conservation efforts saving them from extinction. It is heartbreaking, hopeful, and unmissable.

4. Community & Conservation
When you pay to stay in a conservancy, a significant portion of your fee goes directly to the local landowners who are often Maasai or Samburu communities.

It is a model that proves wildlife is worth more alive than dead. You are not just a tourist. You are an investor in the protection of the land.

The Ultimate VIP Pass
See Kenya the way the early explorers did. It is wild, open, and private.

???? The “Ranger” Upgrade Ready for the exclusive track? We know the small owner run lodges within these conservancies that offer the warmest hospitality. Book your Conservancy stay with us, and we will arrange a Lion Tracking morning with the conservation rangers. You will help them use telemetry equipment to locate collared lions for research. It is a true behind the scenes experience.
