Italy is a cornerstone of the Schengen Area. While many international travelers can enter for tourism without a pre-arranged visa, 2026 brings new digital border protocols you must follow.
Official Resources
Always check the official Italian government sources to avoid unofficial sites with hidden fees:
Visto per l’Italia (Official Portal): vistoperitalia.esteri.it
EU Official ETIAS Info: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias
New Digital Entry Rules
The EES (Entry/Exit System): Manual passport stamping is being phased out. At major Italian gateways like Rome Fiumicino or Milan Malpensa, you will provide biometric data (facial scan and fingerprints) at digital kiosks upon arrival.
ETIAS (Required for Visa-Exempt Travelers): If you are a citizen of the USA, UK, Canada, or Australia, you will soon require an ETIAS travel authorization to enter Italy. It is a simple online process and remains valid for 3 years.
Schengen Visa: If your nationality requires a visa, you must apply for a Type C Tourist Visa via the official Italian consulate or authorized center (like VFS Global) in your region.
Disclaimer: > The Expat Tours provides travel experiences and is not a visa agency. We cannot guarantee entry or provide legal advice. It is the traveler’s responsibility to comply with all EES and ETIAS regulations. Please verify requirements on the official Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before booking.
From the cobblestones of Rome to the canals of Venice, Italy is best enjoyed when you know you are protected.
Choose Your Coverage
Through Our Trusted Partners: We offer optional, comprehensive travel insurance through our vetted partners. These plans are optimized for Italian travel, covering everything from high-speed train delays to medical emergencies.
Your Own Provider: You are welcome to use any trusted service. If you require a Schengen Visa, your policy must have a minimum medical coverage of €30,000.
