Most international travelers (including those from the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia) require a visa to enter Tanzania. In 2026, the government strongly recommends using the digital e-Visa system to avoid long queues at the border.
Official Resources
To ensure you are using the correct government portal and paying the official fees, only use:
Tanzania e-Visa Official Portal: visa.immigration.go.tz
For US Citizens: You are required to apply for a Multiple-Entry Visa, even if you only plan to visit once. The fee is $100 USD and it is valid for 12 months.
For UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian Citizens: You can apply for an Ordinary (Single-Entry) Tourist Visa. The fee is $50 USD and it is valid for up to 90 days.
Visa on Arrival: While still available at major airports like Kilimanjaro (JRO), Dar es Salaam (DAR), and Zanzibar (ZNZ), processing can take over 2 hours during peak season. We recommend the e-Visa for a smoother start to your safari.
Referral Visas: Citizens of certain countries (including Lebanon, Pakistan, and several others) must apply at least 2 months in advance as they require special clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration.
Document Checklist
Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival and have at least one blank page.
Yellow Fever Certificate: Only mandatory if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever (e.g., Kenya, Ethiopia, or Uganda). This includes airport transits of more than 12 hours.
Disclaimer: > The Expat Tours provides safari and cultural experiences and is not a visa agency. It is the traveler’s responsibility to secure the correct entry documents. Please verify current requirements on the official Tanzania Immigration website before booking.
Tanzania has introduced mandatory government-run travel insurance for all foreign visitors in 2026. This is a separate legal requirement from your personal travel insurance.
If your tour includes Zanzibar, you must hold an official policy from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
The Rule: This is mandatory even if you already have private insurance. You will be asked for your ZIC QR code at immigration.

As of the 2025/2026 fiscal year, a similar requirement has been introduced for Mainland Tanzania (safari regions). This covers basic local emergency medical treatment and local rescue services.
The government-mandated insurance provides only basic local coverage. As your travel partner, The Expat Tours strongly recommends that you also carry a comprehensive private travel insurance policy.
