Just 45 Minutes From Marrakech, the World Changes.
The red dust turns to green valleys. The noise of scooters is replaced by the sound of rushing rivers, and the air becomes crisp and cool. You have arrived in the High Atlas Mountains.
At The Expat Tours, we love sending clients here to decompress. Staying in a Kasbah, a traditional fortress style home, offers a connection to the land and the Berber people that is authentic and grounding.
1. The Kasbah Aesthetic
These are not standard hotels. They are part of the landscape.
The buildings are constructed from local clay and straw or pisé which allows them to blend perfectly into the mountainside.
Thick walls keep the rooms cool in summer and warm in winter. Inside, you will find vibrant Berber rugs, hand carved wooden doors, and huge windows designed to frame the mountain peaks like paintings.
2. A Hiker’s Paradise
You do not have to be a mountaineer to enjoy the Atlas, but if you love walking, this is heaven.
From your Kasbah, you can walk straight out onto mule tracks that wind through walnut groves and cherry orchards. You will pass through remote Berber villages where life has remained largely unchanged for centuries. It is not uncommon to be invited in for tea by a local family which is a genuine gesture of hospitality, not a tourist trap.
3. Cool Nights & Fireplaces
The mountains offer a welcome break from the Moroccan heat. Even in summer, the evenings are fresh. In winter, snow caps the peaks.
This makes the Kasbahs incredibly romantic. Nights are spent curled up in front of a wood burning fireplace in the lounge. You can read a book or enjoy a glass of Moroccan grey wine while the wind howls outside.
4. The Famous “Kasbah Tamadot” Effect
Richard Branson put this region on the luxury map with his famous Kasbah Tamadot, but there are many other incredible options.
Whether you choose ultra luxury or a rustic eco lodge, the principle is the same. You get absolute peace, stunning views, and food that comes directly from the garden to your plate.
