There is Silence. And Then There is Sahara Silence.
Standing in the middle of the Erg Chebbi dunes, the quiet is so profound you can hear your own heartbeat. It is a landscape that feels alien, vast, and utterly beautiful.
At The Expat Tours, we know that many travelers want to see the desert but are worried about comfort. That is why we exclusively book Luxury Desert Camps. This is not survival camping. This is a 5 star hotel under the stars.
1. “Roughing It” in Style
Forget sleeping bags on the floor.
You are staying in a spacious canvas suite. Inside, you will find a king sized bed with high thread count linens, Berber rugs covering the floor, and handcrafted furniture.
Yes, you have a private en suite bathroom inside your tent complete with a flush toilet and a hot shower. Washing off the desert dust with hot water in the middle of nowhere is the ultimate luxury.
2. The Camel Commute
The adventure begins before you even arrive. While 4x4s can drive you to the camp, we recommend the traditional arrival which is by camel.
Mounting a camel at sunset and swaying gently over the golden dunes as the sky turns purple is a bucket list moment. Your luggage goes by truck and will be waiting for you in your tent when you arrive.
3. A Billion Star Hotel
The real show starts after dinner. With zero light pollution for miles, the Sahara sky is overwhelming. You do not just see the stars. You see the Milky Way stretching across the horizon like a cloud.
Many of our camps have telescopes on site or expert guides who can navigate the constellations for you. It is a humbling and spiritual experience.
4. Berber Hospitality
The desert is the home of the Amazigh or Berber people, and they are incredible hosts.
Dinner is usually a feast of slow cooked lamb and vegetable tagines served by candlelight. Afterward, the staff will gather around the fire to play traditional drums and sing songs of the desert. You will find yourself dancing under the moon before you know it.
The Edge of the World
Go where the road ends and the magic begins.
???? The “Sandboard” Adventure Ready for the dunes? We select camps that are tucked deep into the dunes ensuring you do not see the lights of the nearby town or other camps.
